Rainy Vietnam Trip Report - Day 7

Date: 19/11/2010
Route: Ho Chi Minh City-Singapore
--Before the trip--
We booked a city tour with hotel's desk officer. The city tour includes a very very simple lunch. Haha! Anyway, the small tourist bus was full of tourists, at least 20 of us. Most of my group mates were Westerners. We were the only Asians, together with another Msia gang of 3. Haha! The city included compulsory shopping stops at some stores.
--1st Stop: War Remnant's Museum--
This is the museum which you shld visit in HCMC. It showcases lots of photos and things left after the Vietnam war. Many photos showed the remains of the people who were killed by bombs, families (include lots of kids) killed by the American soldiers, people who suffered from the chemical warfare (missing limbs, legs, disfigured faces, stillborn babies) etc. Out of respect for the victims, I chose not to take any pics of the photos. For people like me, who does not know much about Vietnam war, this is the place where you can learn loads of stuff about the war.
A statue called "Mother", which is made of bomb fragments.
Before & after pictures of the Hien Luong Bridge. Many places which I visited in Central Vietnam were rebuilt after the war. You will see ruins of city, bridges, schs, churches...whatever.
Outside of the museum building, there were a good collection of fighter jets, tankers etc.

This is a showcase of "Tiger Cages", which are special cells in Con Dao jail.
This is where heads rolled off...
Due to lack of time & there were too many tourists, I cld nt take pics of the cages. It's just pathetic to lock them up in those small cages.
--2nd Stop: Tien Hau Temple--
I think I don't have to intro this temple again. What caught my attention was the rooftop. Very exquisite carvings, but badly maintained. Perhaps they wanted to depict some kind of story....no idea ne.

The altar.
Main entrance.
We're near Cholon (Chinatown) area, and it's interesting to see "五福临门" outside people's home. Perhaps many local Chinese lives around this area.
--3rd Stop: Binh Tay Market--
This is the place for cheap shopping. Binh Tay is a wholesale mkt and they sell everything from food to clothes. I even saw stalls selling Lunar calendars, new year printings etc. Lots of Chinese faces here, and don't be surprised that they cld speak dialects. Haha! Prices here are said to be cheaper than Ben Thanh, which targets at tourists.
We walked to the back of the mkt and saw stalls selling candies and dried stuffs. HM & KH bought dried lotus seeds and we had a gd laugh watching HM bargaining with the auntie, who spoke Cantonese with an accent. HM seriously cannot make it ....hahaha!
--4th Stop: Lacquerware Factory--
This is one of the compulsory shops we visited.

We walked into the factory and saw how lacquerwares were made, step by step.
All handicrafts were handmade...impressive.
--5th Stop: Reunification Palace--
Weather was not good when we reached the palace. It rained like cats & dogs again.
Reunification Palace used to be the President's office of South Vietnam. It was the site where Vietnam war ended as North Viet's army tank crashed through its gates in 1975.
There are many rooms in the palace, and I chose some of the highlights.
Forgot to take note of the room's name. Probably a meeting room.
Probably a hall where President made important speeches.
Another room for them to discuss war strategies...
Vice President's reception room.
The credentials presenting room.
First Lady's reception room.
Cinema.
A helicopter model found on the highest storey of the palace.
--6th Stop: Notre Dame Cathedral & Post Office--
Rain was still heavy. We cld nt enter the Cathedral as it was closed for some private function. The post office was just next door, and it looked quite grand.
ATMs. I nearly thought they were public phone booths.
KH bought her postcard, while I bought some souvenirs for colleagues, and a 2011 calendar for myself.
Notre Dame Cathedral.
--7th Stop: Ben Thanh Market--
Our guide dropped us at Ben Thanh Mkt. Some parts of the mkt was flooded as it was raining heavily, but that did not dampened our mood to do some last min shopping. We bought our Vietnam flag t-shirts after some good bargaining. Haha!
We also bought some coffee powder too. I think we made a mistake by not bargaining for the price we wanted before they grind the coffee beans into powder. Haiz~~Really need ppl like E.W to bargain things for us ne :( (Kiddos can't handle them~lol!)
Anyway, I bought a small packet of hazelnut flavoured coffee. I wanted to buy some Arabica, but my VND was not enough, and I did not want to use my remaining USD.
--8th Stop: Beautiful Saigon Hotel--
We returned to our hotel and waited for a taxi to drive us to the airport. It was raining heavily, and their taxi drivers were unwilling to drive to faraway places as they wld be caught in traffic jams. The hotel offered an airport transfer with a discount, but we decided to stick with a taxi as we knew that it wld cost lesser than the hotel's offer.
--9th Stop: Tan Son Nhat International Airport--
We reached the airport early and had our dinner at the food court.
KH was still feeling unwell, so she had porridge w/ century egg. It smelled really nice!
HM's dinner.
I sort of regret ordering Oyakodon. It was not nice ne :(
Our plane departed on time from HCMC and reached Changi a few mins earlier.
Overall, my first Vietnam trip was rather "tiring", but I was quite glad that my itinerary went smoothly. This is also my first trip with friends only. Quite memorable, but I also realised how bad we are at bargaining. We need aunties ard!!! Hahaha!

Rainy Vietnam Trip Report - Day 6

Date: 18/11/2010
Route: Hue-Da Nang-Ho Chi Minh City
--1st Stop: Da Nang International Airport--
We spent half a day travelling from Hue to HCMC. Luckily the transportation throughout the journey was quite comfortable.
8.30am, we met the funny driver of Orchid and departed for Da Nang airport. The journey from Hue to Da Nang is about 3 hrs.
This time round, we drove through Hai Van Tunnel, which is the longest tunnel in South East Asia.
We were quite early for check-in, so have to grab a bite before we board the plane. There was only 1 small eatery at the airport. I had instant noodles and coffee for lunch. This meal costed a "bomb" ok? I can have far better meals with the amount I paid for these! But no choice...I had to feed myself :(
We did not realised that we cld check-in our luggage and actually waited at the departure hall for quite sometime. The good thing was our luggage wld be the first few to come out when we reached HCMC. Haha!
1.40pm, we departed for HCMC on VN329, which was an Airbus 330 plane. They have perosnal screens on the seat, but no IFE. Well, it's alright for an hr journey...I got my mp4 :)
View from the plane. HCMC, the city of rivers....
We reached HCMC at 2.55pm. Decided to change some VND, but the money changer at the domestic airport got svc charge. So, we walked over to the international airport to change money, and we decided to book a taxi from Mai Linh counter. It costed 8USD for a taxi, but safety was guaranteed.
--2nd Stop: Beautiful Saigon Hotel--
Beautiful Saigon 2 was a small hotel, but the location was quite good. There are lots of restaurants nearby, and it's not too far from Ben Thanh Market.
Toilet.
Our beds. Not as spacious as compared to the previous hotels we stayed in Central Vietnam.
There are LCD TV, PC etc. Quite well equipped, but not enough space for our luggage.
View from our room. HCMC is a city of cables.
--3rd Stop: Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre--
Water puppet is a traditional performance in Vietnam, and we decided to go to the theatre to watch the performance. The maps provided by the hotel & Lonely Planet guidebook were not adequate for us as there were roads which were not shown. So, we thought it was near Ben Thanh mkt, but we were so wrong. Shld have took a taxi.
I've not met with such heavy traffic in Central Vietnam, but this scene is nothing surprising for a big city of 7 million people. The motorbike population is huge as well, and it was difficult to cross their roads. So basically, once u start crossing, don't look back. Ha!
I bet there wld be more high-rise buildings in the future.
We walked to the end of Ben Thanh mkt, and realised that we have not reach Golden Dragon. After walking 2 streets further down, we reached the Unification Palace, and realised the theatre is behind it! (U know how big the palace ground is...)
The suay thing happened next. We heard thunder & lightning and within minutes, rain just fell like cats & dogs. We were drenched even with umbrellas, and HCMC streets started to flood. My shoes, jeans and bag were all wet again!!!
So we have to abort our plan and return to hotel. But, how to flag for a taxi? We were at the wrong side of the road, and many taxis were occupied.
We finally flagged a taxi, but there's no meter, which means we wld have to negotiate with the driver. Heaven was not on our side as it's raining heavily! Going back to hotel was more impt, so we decided to get in and pay the money unwillingly. The 5 mins ride costed 100,000VND, which was nearly the cost from HCMC airport to downtown! I really felt like cursing, but it's inevitable. Haiz~~~
We returned to hotel, and began our drying routine. Haha! It was quite late in the evening, we were tired, wet, and hungry! Changed into my old clothings and we went out to have our dinner. Luckily the rain has stopped....
--4th Stop: Lotteria Fast Food Restaurant--
We did not dine at our hotel area, but walked to the main road and saw this Korean fast food restaurant. I remembered how slow their svc was when I was at Jeju Island airport in 2009. Anyway, Lotteria's menu offered burgers, fried and grilled chicken.
All of us decided to have 2 piece grilled chicken meal with some garlic flavour. Well, I thought the grilled chicken was alright, and it was a little bloody at the bones area. I shld have chose their prawn burger instead.
There goes our Day 6 :(

Rainy Vietnam Trip Report - Day 5

Date: 17/11/2010
Route: Hue-Phong Nha Cave (Quang Binh Province)-Hue
--Before the trip--
Phong Nha cave was closed for nearly a month in Oct, so we were quite lucky as it reopened not long ago. I was worried that we cld not visit Phong Nha due to bad weather, but Mr Trung assured us that we cld go there. Orchid's staff was a little concern with our plan and told us that there were 2 caves (dry & wet), so most probably we cld only visit the dry one.
--1st Stop: Lunch--
We had lunch at a local coffee shop. Lots of flies. Food was alright, but the price was rather expensive.
--2nd Stop: Phong Nha Cave--
It was a 4 hrs journey from Hue to our destination. Mr Trung's wife went with us as well. We reached a small jetty and boarded one of the boats.
Phong Nha is one of the caves located in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, and the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The cave is 7729 m long, contains 14 grottos, with a 13,969 m-long underground river. Scientists have surveyed 44.5km of grottoes in this cave so far, but tourists can only penetrate to a distance of 1500m. (from Wikipedia)
Cruising along Son river. It was raining, and the area was foggy. Cld not snap decent pics as the angle of my cam was not right and I did not want to wet my cam.
The jetty.
After abt nearly an hr, we finally saw the entrance of the cave!

We reached the underground river and this is the wet cave. If you want to visit both caves, pls come during dry season. The wet cave was totally submerged in water during this period of time. I guess even during dry season, there wld be water in the cave as well...(imagine shoes and pants getting wet~~)
The staircase to the dry cave.
There are lots of Speleothems in the cave. Above is Stalactites.
Stalactites & Flowstone.
Stalactites

Mouth of the underground river.

Lots of columns...
Stalagmite.

Stalagmites.

We cld see many crystal-liked minerals.

Forgot to mention, the ground of the cave was covered by sand. Very little water in the cave, so my shoes were quite clean. KH & HM wore slippers though...(hard to walk?)
--3rd Stop: Dinner--
Weather was much better in Hue today. We reached Orchid at 6.15pm....tired! After a short rest, we decided to check out the No.1 restaurant on Tripadvisor, La Carambole.
The restaurant was quite crowded but we managed to find a table. Food was as usual, either Vietnamese or Western. However, their menu offered many choices and I had a hard time deciding what to eat. Lolz!
HM's chicken meat w/ rice.
If I rmbed correctly, this shld be my Tuna. Lolz! Anyway, the fish was delicious!!
KH's meal was really interesting, and it already looked delicious. I forgot what's the actual name but it's a pork dish. It's a pity that the girl's appetite was not good.
HM & I ordered their Lemon Gelato.
Well, it's out last day in Central Vietnam. Heading to HCMC the next day. (wait for my Day 6 report~)
