TV Drama Review #120 - Glittering Days 东方之珠

How long? 30 epis
When & which tv stn? 2006/TVB
Who's in?
Liza Wang ~ Jin Yan
Roger Kwok ~ Ling Feng
Charmaine Sheh ~ Zhu Yu Lan
Susanna Kwan ~ Zhu Xiao Qiao
Chris Lai ~ Xu Yong Kang
Sharon Chan ~ Chang Mei Li Carol
What's it abt?
Jin Yan is the manager of Xia Fei troupe and she's one of the "3 Golden Flowers" back in Shanghai. After the world war, she couldn't find her son zai zai and left for HK with Qiao & others. Qiao's brother Zhu Da Ji took their money and disappeared, thus Xia Fei didn't do very well. Unfortunately, fate has brought her in conflict with Ling Feng, a well known singer who 1st sing at "Li De", and then at "Pearl of Orient". Ling Feng comes from a small village and worked his way up to stardom. Despite his arrogance in front of his colleagues, he is good to his brother Wei and others whom he is indebted to. His childhood friend, Xiao Lan, has problems to speak properly and has a crush on him. After an incident, Lan could speak properly again, while Jin Yan trains her up for the contest at "Pearl of Orient". Things started to go hay-wired for Ling Feng. Due to Wei's greediness, Ling Feng was involved with Inspector Hua's wife's suicide and he lost his fame and career.
On the other hand, Qiao's only son Kang wants to pursue a singing career, despite his mum's strong objections. He and Carol became good friends, though they disliked each other initially.
Jin Yan finally realises that Ling Feng is her long lost son after she heard a track sang by Ling. Though she wants to acknowledge her son, her relationship with Ling now was very bad and Ling wouldn't believe that she's his mum.
Xiao Lan became the famous Xun Lan at "Pearl of Orient" and has to work with Wei, who wants to court her but failed.
Jin Yan and Ling Feng finally acknowledged each other, while Ling Feng finally grabbed his courage and stopped Lan from leaving again.
Love & Hates:
Plot-The background and theme of the drama make this drama unique. Lots of chances to listen to chinese pop of the 60s & 70s. But of coz, most of them sang the songs over a few times, so kinda bored la. For eg, Ling Feng's classic hits are "Xun Meng Yuan", "Mei Lan Mei Lan Wo Ai Ni" & "Bai Yun Tian". Storyline was standard, with expected twists la.
Cast-Roger Kwok seemed to be like Ah Wang at certain angle..and there's really a "Ah Wang" in the drama though. May be Roger's image of Ah Wang was too strong and the guy who did the mandarin dubbing was the same for "Ah Wang". Ha! Anyway, Roger's performance was not too bad-he gotta act arrogant when Ling Feng was still famous, and he started to pick himself up after he lost everything and became a sugarcane seller. Ling Feng is a character full of developments, and Roger did well to portray them. It's a pity that most of his songs in mandarin weren't sang by himself.
Liza Wang was alright to me...didn't really impressed me too much leh. May be Jin Yan was kinda annoying somehow, so I didnt really like her.
Charmaine's performance was good, esp. when Xiao Lan was still a village girl. Hahaha! Her transformation into Xun Lan was pretty good too...and she sang most of her songs by herself. Not too bad...However, her chemistry with Roger was so so to me...may be becoz' they didn't really have alot of interaction when Ling Feng went MIA. So, not much sparks.
The other cast are ok, gotta mention the few baddies like Chang Sheng, Inspector Hua, Fei Fei & Luo Wei....without them, this drama wld be definitely boring. But i really disliked them to core, esp. Luo Wei...really wanna throw eggs at him. Lolz!
Songs-It's rare to have a TVB drama with so many classic songs. Not sure if there's an ost for it. Themesong "Pearl of Orient" is sang by Liza Wang in both Canto & Mandarin versions. Butta, I didn't really like the song, may be becoz' the melody and the lyrics didnt flow very well. Personally, I like "Bai Yun Tian", though the song doesn't sound 60s or 70s.
Worth watching?
A must-watch for TVB fans.

TV Drama Review #118 - To Grow With Love 肥田囍事

How long? 21 epis
When & which tv stn? 2006/TVB
Who's in?
Myolie Wu ~ He Mian Tian/Fei Tian/Tina
Andy Hui ~ Dai Xi/Da Si Xi/Daniel
Selena Li ~ Guo Bao Le
Kenneth Ma ~ Mai Jia Hui
Claire Yiu ~ Song Man Yi
Jack Wu ~ Lin Guan Xi
What's it abt? (edited from Dramawiki)
Fei Tian is an overweight daughter of a wealthy man in the Philippines. Worried for her daughter's future due to her size, Fei Tian's father searches and finds what he believes to be the ideal life partner for Tian. The man happens to be Jia Hui, who has a wealthy background but is poor in health. Tian strongly believes that her ideal partner has to connect with her, thus
she runs off to Hong Kong and stays with her cousin Bao Le, who's aiming to get married by 25 and enjoys wealthy life.
Dai Xi is a successful designer and one of the owner of D-Day. A perfectionist, he feels that appearances are everything and anyone unable to take care of their own appearance cannot be trusted to take care of anything important.
Tian happened to work under Xi after several incidents and the two of them are loggerheads.Xi has a girlfriend, Man Yi, who works hard to market D-Day in overseas.
A strange turn of events brings the two together in the Philippines. An accident leaves Xi with memory loss & Jia Hui unconscious. Tian decided to play a prank on Xi by convincing him that he is her boyfriend and let him gain weight by eating and sleeping.
Finally, Xi regains his memory and return to his old life, while his relationship with Tian strained again. He planned to marry Man Yi while Tian decided to marry Jia Hui. However, unknown to Xi, his feelings for Tian has already started after he returned from the Phillippines...
Love & Hates:
Plot-I decided to give this drama one more chance after giving up watching online. Well, the drama didn't turned out to be that bad..though there are many reviews which said this drama was really ridiculous. (So, sometimes, don't let the reviews hinder your choice..hahaha!) Actually, the plot was generally alright till epi 13 to 15, where the focus was on Fei Tian getting married and last minute fly ppl aeroplane...There's very little on Dai Xi, which made that part quite boring. I don't really like how the plot tried to get Tian & Jia Hui together. Tian became indecisive, and made marriage seemed to be like child's play. Luckily, the storyline picked up after that part, though the ending was, as usual, too rushy for me. Why can't TVB filmed a good ending for once ah? Ha! Side plots were mostly focused on Bao Le & Guan Xi, the girls' landlord Xiu Lan, and on Man Yi and D-Day's another boss, Yi Ming.
Cast-Well, I think Myolie did put in the effort for this role, gaining weight la and gotta portray the difficulties a plump woman may face. She's quite lovely somehow, with Fei Tian's fashion style. Acting wise was alright, though personally, I didn't really like this character towards the end. May be it's becoz' of the story developments la.
E.W was saying Andy Hui looked so much older in the drama, which I quite agree. He didn't seemed to match well with Myolie too...butta, as the drama went on, I felt more comfortable watching them together. As for chemistry, perhaps it's not very strong...I think there's better candidates for the role of Dai Xi la.
Selena did surprisingly well for her role. Most of you won't like Bao Le very much, but I think Selena did captured the spirit of Le. She's vain la, aiming to tackle rich guys la, later her relationship with Tian strained becoz' Tian "destroyed" her marriage with Jia Hui. However, I am glad that Le finally found her right guy la...I think she's really compatible with Jack Wu, who also gained weight to look fat.
Kenneth Ma really looked so country pumpkin to me! OMG! flowery shirts plus his gel hair and specs...not handsome liao leh! Haha! This character is actually not an easy one to act, though I find Hui really irritating towards the end of the drama, he's still quite funny in some parts..like he tested Xi on the qian bian IQ qns, and when Xi imitated Hui's talking and dressing styles..haha!
The other cast also did well, wanna mention the landlord Lan and Guan Xi's father...haha! Really funny...
Songs-Themesong sang by Andy & Myolie was alright. Though somehow I don't find their voices perfectly in sync with each other. Loved the ending theme by Andy la.."Mr.Pig" & the female version "Ms.Pig" by Myolie.
Worth watching?
Would recommend to those who like romance-comedy dramas. As if watching this drama will make u have the intention to slim down...i really doubt so. Lolz!

TV Drama Review #109 - Face to Fate 布衣神相

How long? 30epis
When & which tv stn? 2006/TVB
Who's in?
Frankie Lam as Li Bu Yi
Raymond Lam as Lai Yao-er
Tavia Yeung as Ye Meng Se
Selena Li as Yan Ye Lai
John Chiang as Shen Xing Nan
Anne Heung as Yue Lan/ Mi Qian
Nancy Wu as Shen Jiang Hong
Derek Kwok as Liu Fen Yu
What's it abt?
Every few years, the White and the Herectics (Black) would take part in the Golden Seal Battle to determine who takes reign for the upcoming few years.
Li Bu Yi is a fortune teller with great martial arts skills. He travels through life helping people and wants to avenge for his Master by stopping his Senior from controlling the world. His senior turns out to be Ge Shu Tian, the leader of the herectics (Tianyu Palace). Although Li Bu Yi does not want to interfere b/w the White & Black, he ends up helping the White by finding another 5 martial arts experts after the original 5 participants were mysteriously killed by the Herectics. After that, he is accused of helping the Herectics by Shen Xing Nan and becomes a wanted man.
Lai Yao-er is the descendant of the Shen Yi family. He has the ability to cure any disease known to man, yet he cannot cure his family's own genetic disease, Premature Degeneration. As time passes, his brother and him continue to age away. Along the way of finding a cure, Yao-er meets Bu Yi and others. He slowly breaks away from his selfish self and accepts their friendship and even finds the love of his life. Later, he served Ge Shu Tian in order to find the last hate from the "7 Hates" and to save Ye Lai.
Ye Meng Se is one of the disciples of Flying Fish Villa who is helping Bu Yi to find the new experts. Her world changed after she found her real father is Ge Shu Tian, and the real traitor in the Villa, who is her master.
Yan Ye Lai is an ex-thief who tries to be an average woman. She owns a inn in a small town and lives through life as if she does not have a secret past. She has the responsibility of taking care of her deceased husband's son and mother. Although she hides herself by pushing people away, the others eventually discover her secrets. Later, she fell for Yao-er and was seriously injured by the one of the White Sect leaders.
Shen Xing Nan is the alliance leader of the White and the head of Flying Fish Villa, but secretly, he cooporated with the Herectices in order to get the last part of the "Red Sand Palm" manual. His wife,Mi Qian, once had an affair with Bu Yi before they got married. She's faithful to Nan, until she realises that he's the real traitor and in order to keep his secret, Nan killed her.
Shen Jiang Hong is Nan's daughter who is always in some sort of trouble because she was desperate to prove herself to her father that she can contribute to the villa too. She becomes Liu Fen Yu's hostage during one incident, but instead of killing her like what an assassin would do, he fell in love with her and she fell for him in return.
Love & Hates:
Plot-Actually,I think this drama's plot and the cast seemed ordinary to me, that means, not really a big production. Butta, ordinary TVB production is still watcable though you can guess what will happen as the drama moves on. So, not much of a surprise to the twists and turns. I definitely gotta agree with what many others said abt this drama. Too much talking and too little action. Haha! Seriously, whenever the characters wanna fight, they would have to talk first, and sometimes in the end, there's no fight. e.g Liu Fen Yu wanna kill Bu Yi in one scene, but Bu Yi told him to save Jiang Hong. So, Liu Fen Yi left lo...and didn't kill Bu Yi. If there are more actions b/w the white & the black, may be the drama would be more interesting.
Cast-Frankie Lam's acting is average most of the time, with little expressions. He's alright for Bu Yi la, though I think there may be better choices. Chemistry with Tavia was alright too, I somehow did hoped that Tavia would click with Raymond's character. Haha! The two seemed to be more compatiable. Raymond's character has much more developments, he's not exactly a kind fella initially, then he helped Bu Yi to find the masters (sort of turned good), but then, in b/w he's binded by evil forces because he wanna find cure for his bro la...(so sort of bad again)...he's always b/w good and evil until the very last minute. Haha! As for his chemistry with Selena, I wld say they're not too bad ne...getting better as their characters got closer to each other. Tavia's character is with some developments too...but then, she's still a gd person all the way. The guy whom i really need to applaud is John Chiang. haha! He really got onto my nerves everytime he "zheng zhe yan shuo xia hua". Haha! Really want him to die quickly in the show sia. Lolz...He's really good in his character...2 faced "hero". Other cast did a relative gd job as well, but I find the "flying fish villa" disciples and the other sect leaders annoying. Haha!
Song- Themesong by Raymond and ending theme by Frankie & Tavia. I like the themesong ba, nice lyrics.
Worth watching?
Hmm...would recommend to those who like to watch TVB's wu xia dramas. Or else, you can skip this drama as it's not really a must-watch. It's not a boring drama though.

TV Drama Review #98 - Forensic Heroes 法政先锋

How long? 25 epis
When & which tv stn? 2006/TVB
Who's in?
Bobby Au Yeung ~ Gao Yan Bo
Yoyo Mung ~ Liang Xiao Rou
Frankie Lam ~ Gu Ze Chen
Linda Chung ~ Lin Ding Ding
What's it abt?
Yan Bo and his team worked with the police force to crack down many murder cases. Xiao Rou is the new head of the police department. Ze Chen is a forensic doctor who does post-mortem on the victims. Ding Ding is a new junior technician in the forensic team. Besides cracking the cases together, the characters were also entangled in their romances. Chen and Rou dated each other briefly but broke up after they found that they are suitable to be friends. Rou and Bo's romance was hindered by Bo's actions as he still loved his late wife. Chen and Ding Ding clicked off well and romance sparked.
Love & Hates:
The websites said FH is the chinese version of CSI. Though I have nv watch CSI before, I think FH is still far from CSI, in terms of the production and plot. FH's plot is actually quite a standard formula for other TVB police-related dramas. Just that, this time round, the plot's main focus was how the forensic team assisted the police force. It tends to show that without the forensic team, the police force wld find it hard to crack cases becoz' of lack of evidences. Haha! As for the cases, it's easy to guess who are the suspects. I wished TVB wld improve on the cases, may be make them more tougher or with more twists. It's really no kick..haha!
The cast was good generally. I wld say there's chemistry b/w the leads, but not very much coz' the romance part was touched on rather briefly.
Bobby's performance was as expected. It's either he's a funky guy or a serious guy in his dramas. This time round, he kinda reminded me of his character in "Take My Word for It".
I did quite enjoy Linda's performance and I think she's getting better each time round. Perhaps must thank TVB for giving her many chances la. Hah!
Frankie and Yoyo were alright, nothing new from their performance. However, I like Yoyo letting her hair down, she's more pretty lo.
Themesong by Frankie Lam...average ne~
Worth watching?
Definitely a must-watch! There will be a sequel next yr, with Charmaine Sheh and Kevin Cheng as additional cast. Spectacular ne!

TV Drama Review #89 - War & Destiny 乱世佳人

How long? 30epis
When & which tv stn? 2006/TVB
Who's in?
Myolie Wu ~ Gu Ping An
Sunny Chan ~ Pan Shi Chang
Ron Ng ~ Tian Hao Yi/Song Tian Xiao Yi
Leila Tong ~ Zheng Yue Feng
Mandy Cho ~ Shen Yi Ping
What's it abt?
In 1937, Manchuria was occupied by Japanese forces. Ping An and a brother-like Xiao Yi brought their sick mother to Nanjing. They were looking for Gu Wan Qi, who owned the biggest rice company in Nanjing. Qi was An's father and after An's mother died, An stayed with her father's family. Pan Shi Chang, a business-minded trader who worked with the Japanese bought over Qi's rice company. He hired a singer Shen Yi Ping to sing at his restaurant. Both of them turned out to be undercovers for the Chinese government.
Soon, Nanjing fell to Japanese forces. An was shocked to know that Xiao Yi, with whom she grew up, was actually the son of the Japanese military officer, Song Tian Yi. She also discovered that Yi, whom she considered to be her fiance, was actually in love with Yue Feng, the fourth wife of her father.
After pretending to be lovers to let Yi forget abt An, An finally knew about Chang's real identity. She then fell in love with this "traitor" whom she hated initially...
Love & Hates:
Actually, this drama's plot was typical...I bet most of you can sort of guess the ending la. However, what really made me wanna watch was becoz' of Sunny and Myolie. Though they only got together towards the ending of the drama...I really like the scenes and chemistry b/w them.
Honestly, I am quite a fan of Sunny Chan. He can be a super nice guy in one drama, and a baddie in another drama. This time round, he's the perfect man for this "traitor" role. This character has depth...coz' Pan Shi Chang isn't just a simple guy. Myolie's performance was not bad, though I didnt really like her character Ping An. Why? Typical super nice girl who's sacrificing for others willingly and always put herself last. Ron Ng's performance was not bad too. Initially, Xiao Yi was just another typical role Ron wld act...guy who never thinks carefully b4 he acts. However, he changed alot after he knew abt his real identity. Now, Xiao Yi dressed differently, behaved different and speaks differently. His chemistry with Leila was alright, butta a pity that there weren't too many scenes b/w them. As for Leila, she did rather well for this character..butta, nothing too special la.
Another "couple" whom I think is more interesting than Yi-Feng was Song Tian Yi (Sek Sau) & Mandy Cho. Never seen Mandy's performance b4...and I think she did pretty well this time round. Matured and pretty singer...and I liked her voice too...
Worth watching?
Wld reco to TVB fans...It may be pretty boring initally, but the plot wld get better as the drama progresses. Of coz, I am glad that I could catch the canto version la. Also, check out the themesong "Xing Er" by Myolie Wu. She really can sing quite well...

TV Drama Review #87 - La Femme Desperado 女人不易做

How long? 22epis
When & which tv stn? 2006/TVB
Who's in?
Sheren Tang ~ Hai Qiao
Melissa Ng ~ Gao Zhi Ling
Michael Tse ~ Wen Jing Liang
Raymond Lam ~ Qi Kuan
Kenneth Ma ~ Gao Zhi Li
Kate Tsui ~ Hai Xuan
What's it abt?
The three women in this series reflect the roles of women in this modern society. Hai Qiao - strong willed woman whose mind is set on climbing the corporate ladder and resist romance after she's being hurt by man. Zhi Ling - A woman who believes her life goal is to get married and obey her husband. Hai Xuan - young, ambitious and confident woman, who wanna prove her ability to show that whatever man can do, woman also can accomplish.
Zhi Ling's husband Jing Liang cheated on her and she wanted a divorce. However, Ling still has to face Liang on working matters. Three new colleagues came and one of them happeend to be Qi Kuan, who is Zhi Li's friend and Ling's ex-tutee. He has liked Ling for over ten years and confessed his love for her. However, Ling could not accept him as "Jie Di Lian" is not really accepted in this society, and definitely not in her family. (Her dad and brothers are all male-chauvinist).
Qiao worked very hard to keep her position in tact from competitors in the company. She has wanted to have a child of her own, but not getting married. Thus, she asked Ling to help her to find a good man and smart man. She set her eyes on Kuan at first, but she realised later that this is a selfish act. Qiao's only regret is her only sister Xuan, who left her for the states and has not keep in contact with her. Finally, Xuan returned to HK, but their relationship is still as bad as usual. Qiao had a one-night-stand with Jing Liang, and she realised that Liang is not that bad afterall, though he has a bad personality. Soon, Qiao realised she's pregnant with Liang's child. However, she decided to keep mum and wanna raised the child by herself. Liang later became her child's fake daddy as he wanna be a parent very much.
Zhi li, Ling's brother, is a sushi master and works in "Li Shan Hei Bu", which belongs to Liang.
Li,who has very old-fashioned thinking, believes that women cannot become sushi masters. Women should stay at home and do their duties. Li began to fell for Xuan after she shows him much concern, but he does not know what to do to confess to Xuan. Li is finally convinced that women are quite capable too after Xuan's talents in becoming a sushi master.
Love & Hates:
This is the drama with the highest viewership last yr. Expected quite alot from it la, but was a little disappointed with the plot. Perhaps it's not the best, but it's still watchable. Personally I think "Men in pain"' had a better and more realistic plot.
The cast did well generally. I gotta say Michael Tse finally proved that he could be a lead, though he was not given much chance. His character JL was an interesting fella...lots of changes with him being a baddie initially, then turned a gd guy but nobody believed him...and turned bad again to revenge Qiao, though he liked her and he's not tt bad personally liao.
The focus was on the 3 main ladies..and I would only say their characters were alright, but nothing too spectacular. Sheren did a perfect job as Qiao and her chemistry with Michael was good too. Melissa was alright, but I did not like her character Ling la. Given her first failed marriage experience, it seemed that she wld think of divorce asap when she found that her 2nd marriage was hard to maintain. As for Xuan by Kate...I found her hairstyle irritating. I didnt like Xuan initially, but I think she got better after working with Li. Haha. Kate Tsui is still quite new la...acting average. As for the 2 other guys Raymond and Kenneth...their performances were zhong gui zhong ju. Their characters were normal la, so nothing spectacular.
Overall, still enjoyed the whole drama. Themesong by Miriam Yeung...didnt find it nice initially, but time proved that this song is those "nai ting" type.
Worth watching?
A must-watch for TVB fans, though the plot was not fantastic. However, I guessed women nowadays would share the same sentiments like those in the drama. We don't wanna be sterotyped right? Women can also prove their abilities in work right? Yeah!

TV Drama Review #86 - Men In Pain 男人之苦

How long? 21epis
When & which tv stn? 2006/TVB
Who's in?
Damien Lau ~ Kang Tian Ren
Louisa Lo ~ Huang De Qiao
Ron Ng ~ Kang Shi Xi
Toby Leung ~ Gao Fen
What's it abt?
This series talks about different generations of men, who are facing different types of pressures. Kang Tian Ren is the head of the family who has many responsibilities at work and at home. Because of all these pressure, he becomes a very selfish person. His son Shi Xi is an optimistic person, who cares less about anything, except playing with his friends.
Tian Ren realizes that he has some 'problems' in the bedroom. However, he does not let his wife De Qiao know, in order to save his pride. Instead, he asked his friend Lily to "test" for him. This later led to De Qiao and Tian Ren's divorce.
At work, Tian Ren is sandwiched b/w his female boss and her son. He finally decided to work under her son Rex for the A&A project.
Shi Xi meets Gao Fen,who's going to study in the university. They fall for each other and spent the night together. To their horror, Fen soon finds herself pregnant with Shi Xi's child. Fen's family is furious and blame Tian Ren for not teaching his son properly. The couple get married while the two in-laws finally stopped quarelling and accept each other.
Tian Ren is now going through family problems, working situations, money problems which are all the troubles that can make men feel a lot of pain.
Loves & Hates:
This drama is the sister drama of "La Femme" ba. Basically the plot was to show how men at different ages coped with their problems from their families and work. This drama didn't really sided the men with unrealistic incidents or storylines, thus I find the drama rather realistic. Many of a times, men were expected to do too many things and women tend to request too much sometimes. Actually, I find this plot talking abt women at different ages too...one binded by marriage, one who only wants love but no marriage and one who controlled the family and got married to spite ex-lover.
The cast did very well generally. Damien Lau was superb. I bet u guys have nv seen him in such a "crazy" character before. Haha..His image was rather strict most of the time, that's why i liked his change this time round. Great chemistry with Louisa too...bravo!
Ron Ng has nv impressed me with his acting and characters...coz' they are the same most of the time. Not an exception this time round, his character is still the typical "only wanna play" and rash son. What's different is that after Shi Xi became a father himself...I think Ron did pretty well here. I could see changes in his character..getting more mature, more responsible and of coz'..a happy dad. Also, a son who tried to reconcile the divorcing couple. At least, I did see some improvements from him here. However, not very sure abt his other dramas la..lolz!
Toby Leung is very new to me..her 2nd drama is the big production "drive of life" now airing in HK. Not very pretty to me..and I didn't find Ron and her compatible. Acting was average...so not much comments here...coz' Fen is not a very interesting character.
There were quite a few side plots, like Qiao coping with 2 dates after she seperated from Ren. What's the funny part was Ren actually gave her advice to cope with the 2 beaus..lolz! Qiao's elder sis Lan and her family. (Though her sis changed for the better, I find it rather fake coz' human nature wont change that fast..lolz!) Qiao's younger sis Hui and Ren's boss Cong...cute couple etc.
There's only an ending song by Ron Ng...and I like the intro of the drama..very cute photos to intro the characters and their relationshops.
Worth watching?
Definitely a must-watch! Don't siam becoz' of the cast...coz' I know only Ron and Damien are more famous. Haha...

TV Drama Review #77 - The Biter Bitten 人生马戏团

How long? 20 episodes
When & which tv stn? 2006/TVB
Who's in?
Benny Chan ~ He Jun Feng
Linda Chung ~Lu Dan
Michael Tong ~ Zhang Jian Xing
Shirley Yeung ~ Xi Ke Er
Stephen Au ~ Gan Lin
What's it abt?
Jun Feng was trapped between helping his mother at her company, or to help his grandfather's factory in Pan Yu, China. Since Feng did not want to choose between them, he worked at the zoo with his best friend Xing. There, they met an archaeologist Joey, who was naive and short-tempered, tho' kind-hearted. They also met an acrobat Dan Dan, who was frequently being bullied by her groupmates. Xing was smitten by her and decided to chase for her love.
Joey, with the "help" of Feng and Xing, realised that her boyfriend had another girlfriend. She was very upset, but soon, she began to develop feelings for Feng. Things got complicated for the four friends when Joey and Xing found out that Feng and Dan Dan liked each other. This resulted in the hilarious plans to separate them and it always ended up backfiring on Joey and Xing. And of coz, this silly couple wld find themselve liking each other too.
Feng and Xing assisted the Professor and Joey in searching the "Ten Tigers" treasures. They found that Dan Dan's grandmother was the Fourth Tiger's lover, and her acrobat instructor Gan Lin,was the grandson of the Third Tiger. As they got closer and closer to the treasure, the group found out that more people were also hunting for the treasures and they were in deep trouble.
Loves & Hates:
Basically, the plot was slightly above average, I only liked the part on the treasure hunt thing, but not really on the relationship part...kinda annoying somehow. Hahaha. Well, i just hope that the plot wont make Jun Feng such a smart guy. I mean every clue seems to be so easy for him, hey really no kick lo! Hahaha! Anyway, I like how the plot unfolds, with more "unknown" ppl joining in the game..and slowly u wld find out they were with us all the time.
This time round, the leads didnt quite impress me much, but surprisingly Michael Tong and Shirley Yeung did a relatively gd job. Haha! This super annoying couple, u definitely wld find them "very fan" initially, but the joy comes when they fell for each other...haha! I somehow find Michael abit "too muscular" in this drama...not very handsome leh. Most of the time he gotta act as the playful Ah Xing..I thought Benny Chan looked more suitable..haha! (Benny looked younger mah...). Shirley, this gal was the candy pie in "Always ready"..and she did it again in this drama. She's not a sweetie pie here la, but her character was just eye-catching, much more interesting than Linda's Dan Dan. Coincidentally, Linda was also in "Always Ready"....and i still didnt really like her. Perhaps her character was so so la..limited developments.
Actually I wld prefer Jun Feng to end up with Joey lo, coz' they got the chemistry..and they looked matching...haiz...too bad.
Benny looked good here, but his "too clever brain" didnt seem convincing to me. Hahaha! He looked alright with Linda, but somehow the chemistry just lacked a little.
Stephen Au...the cunning baddie in the drama, gave a good performance here. His evil-looking eyes were really very evil when he's up to something bad. Wow!
Worth watching?
Wld reco to TVB fans out there....basically just bear with Ah Xing and Joey la. (Their revenge part was funny tho...hehe!)

Johnny returned to Stanley and moved into Jason's house. Everybody except Jason's parents did not like him and were suspicious of him as his father was a thief. While trying to fulfil his father's wish, he was conned by Hui Zi, who's a single-mum with her son & mother-in-law. Hui Zi try to cheat people for money to clear her debts and Johnny helped her to clear her debts later on.
Jason moved back to Stanley after he broke up with Choco while Cheng's ex-boyfriend Vincent returned from the States...
Loves & Hates:
Plot isnt exciting and too predictable. As i said many times before, TVB would try to squeeze in another bad scenario before the drama ends of happily. So, I am watching for the cast..thank goodness! Ha!
I must applaud for Wayne and Halina...super funny pair! Without them I think this drama is gonecase ya. Wayne did looked "suspicious" initially, I really thought he's coming up with something bad, butta I was wrong la. It's good to see how he proved the others wrong and soon nearly everyone could accept him. I was loling when I saw how Halina tried to seduce Cheng's uncle for his money.
Kevin's acting hasnt impressed me much, coz his characters arent special enough. Jason is one of them too. Predictable and standard. Sharon's Choco was "interesting" enough. I really disliked this gal, even tho' she became a better person later on. Gotta credit to Sharon's acting and image la. Very convincing..haha! Hope to see her in other dramas lo..(but pls dont be a bad gal again..)
Nnadia's Cheng...some ppl found her "too gd to be true". Honestly I dont think Cheng is perfect. Take her relationship with Vincent for eg..she didnt love him enough & didnt want to sacrifice for him. I gotta agree this character was near to perfect, but I believe there are such ppl around. Haha! Nnadia looked very cheerful in this drama and her sunny image is just quite different from the rest. (Short hair, always in tees & pants) Mr Chean said Nnadia looked too old for Kevin..but they looked fine to me. Hahaha! As for chemistry wise, still a little lacking b/w them though.
Worth watching?
Hmm....I wont say it's a "must-watch" drama. Mainly becoz' the plot is too standard and kinda dull. However, u can check out how Stanley looks like, if u havent been there. Nice beaches & landscapes...something different from the downtown.

TV Drama Review #72 - A Pillow Case of Mystery 施公奇案

How long? 20 epis
When & who created? 2006/TVB
Who's in?
Bobby Au Yeung ~ Shi Shi Lun
Kenix Kwok ~ Mi Xiang Rong
Benny Chan ~ Huang Tian Ba
Tavia Yeung ~ Princess Ming Zhu
What's abt?
Shi Lun, along with his family, came to Jiang Du county to be its new judge. In his first case which involved the missing dumplings, he had to sentence the town fool. When the fool was found hanging in his house, Tian Ba blamed Lun for his suicide. Everything seems to be getting worse and worse, until Lun found a ceramic pillow by accident. The pillow contained a spirit, who dropped Lun hints to help him crack the cases. The spirit later turned out to be Rong's maternal grandfather. It turned out that the pillow spirit wanted Lun and Rong to solve the mystery of the Tang family massacre 20 yrs ago....
Loves & Hates:
This drama was funny & interesting, but the plot went downhill after the secret of Xiang Rong's family was revealed. Too much quarelling & misunderstandings dragged the last few epis of the drama. But then, the twist at the last part was quite good la..provided u havent read the synop beforehand. Hahaha!
What saves the day was the cast, who did a reasonable good job. It's always entertaining to see Bobby, who's the cheerful lead in most of his dramas. With the help of his pillow, it's quite fun to see how the clues could help him to solve the cases..Kenix's character was alright, nothing too special about XR, but luckily she has good chemistry with Bobby la. Long time didnt see Benny on tv liao, butta his acting seems kinda same to me...nothing new. Tavia's doing alright lah, chemistry with Benny was good generally.
Worth watching?
Wld reco to my pals out there, but do bear with the part when Xiang Rong wanna leave Shi's family. I also buay tahan..hahaha!

TV Drama Review #66 - Always Ready 随时侯命

How long? 30 epis
When & who created? 2006/TVB
Who's in?
Ekin Cheng ~ Gao Ke Feng Matthew
Charmaine Sheh ~ Kang You Lan Carrie
Bowie Lam ~ Ye Qing Yun Ben
Linda Chung ~ Shi Chu Qi
Shirley Yeung ~ Zhou Xiao Juan Nikki
Lai Lok Yi ~ Jiang Jia Nuo Kelvin
What's it abt?
Ke Feng is a 2nd grade aircrewman at the Govt Flying Service (GFS) while his best pal Ben is a 1st class pilot. Ke Feng's girlfriend You Lan was in coma for the past 3 yrs after she met with an accident. He visited her everyday without knowing that she had the intention to break up with him 3 yrs back. You Lan woke up, but lost her memory. Soon, they were back together, but Feng didnt realise his problems with You Lan resurfaced again..They broke up and this time round, You Lan fell for Ben, who us a divorcee with a kid Jacky.
Feng and his colleagues are training 3 3rd grade aircrewmen...the only female Chu Qi is under Feng. Qi thought Feng was prejudiced against her and disliked him. Soon, Feng realised Qi's problems and helped her to overcome with it, but this also led Qi to depend on him...and fell for him later on.
Ben is training Jia Nuo, who's from a good background & did not experienced any big setbacks. Ben was very strict with him and Jia Nuo felt very stressed. Luckily, Xiao Juan gave him encouragements time after time. Juan on the other hand, was secretly in luv with Ben, but Ben rejected her in a gentle way...and they remained as good friends.
Loves & Hates:
Plot-Not very exciting but it's not boring either. Actually i wld say as the drama progresses, the plot is getting better la. Actually this drama is quite a propaganda to promote GFS? haha! The rescuing and training scenes were alright, nothing too exciting as they were repeatable all the while. The only exciting one was when Ben's helicopter was hit and dropped into the sea..the effects were not too bad..and later on Ben went missing, the whole GFS was searching for him day and night...The mood and excitment were there...to keep me stick onto the tv..wondering when Ben wld be rescued. Didnt like the twist towards the end of the drama, where Ben's ex-wife wanna fight custody with him...why add so many "big twists" towards the end...it's too rushy le. (i think there's one more big accident at the end also...typical TVB ending ah..)
Cast-Overall, it's alright...though they were a few "big names" la. Dun expect very good acting from them. Lolz...why leh? Ekin's acting was good when Feng was goofy, but his acting was kinda stale when Feng was upset or when he's emotional. His expression is just..not sad enough! Ha! Bowie Lam...always the same hairstyle and image to me...nothing new from him la. I only liked his interaction with Feng and his son...omg! His son is super cute la! "Small adult" lo...u will like him very much. Charmaine was so so la, didnt like her short hair image and I didnt like You Lan. Dunno why leh...i think her character was rather self-centred...especially when she wanna break up with Feng. Shirely deserved to get the "best supporting actress" with her Juan role, she's really good la! Her character is the happy pie in the drama, and i definitely like her moments with Jia Nuo..lovely couple! Linda Chung...first time see her in a drama ba..impression was not deep, her acting needs more improvements ya, i think she tried hard with those emotional scenes, but she needs to be more natural la. Lai Lok Yi was average...only enjoyed his scenes with Juan..hehe! Other newbies like Charles Seto didnt leave me a deep impression too..
Songs-Ekin's theme "Always ready" was ok, but i thot Bowie's ending theme was more catchy? Hehe!
Worth watching?
It's an average drama which i wld usually rate 7.5/10 la..(last time). TVB fans shld just go for it, but do bear with the boring moments. As for those who didnt like the cast, skip if u like.

TV Drama Review #63 - Lethal Weapons of Love & Passion 覆雨翻云

Episodes: 40
Yr of telecast/TV Stn: 2006/TVB
Main Cast:
Raymond Lam ~ Feng Xing Lie
Charmaine Sheh ~ Qin Meng Yao
Bosco Wong ~ Han Bo
Sonija Kwok ~ Bing Yun
Derek Kwok ~ Pan Ban
Sharon Chan ~ Xu Ye Yue
Summary: Adopted from the original novel, LWLP is about the Han Chinese trying to protect their land while the Mongolians wanted to restore their empire. The story started off with Feng Xing Lie, who was married to Bing Yun, Meng Yao's shi jie. Bing Yun was actually helping Pan Ban to recover Feng's lost memory as a Mongolian prince and to help Pan to practice his dark martial arts. Feng became good friends with Han Bo after being chased by Pan Ban. Feng also met Qin Meng Yao and they got closer day after day, after Bing Yun disappeared after their wedding. Han Bo learnt his martial arts from his masters while he and Ye Yue's relationship changed from lovers to siblings. Pan Ban restored Feng's memory and both of them made plans to overthrow the Ming emperor, while Han also became Emperor Zhu Yuan Zhang's trusted person. Their friendship were tested as they became enemies. After a war which took many innocent lives, Feng and Han decided to have a duel- the loser would have to retreat with his soldiers...
Comments: Boring...was the word i gotta described this drama. Pls pardon me..those LWLP fans out there. Firstly, I dont see the need to have 40 epis for this drama..it shld have cut to 20..and that wld make the drama more exciting. Plot was too sianz...too much talking but too few actions. Only the last few epis were entertaining enough. Characters wise...i guessed Pan Ban stood out of the crowd la. Raymond's Feng Xing Lie was alright...liked his appearance and of coz' Ray's acting la (he had expressed Feng's emotions quite well). Bosco was average this time round, his character was meant to cheer up the mood in the drama..butta I didnt quite like it, and dunno why i just find him a little odd in that ancient setting...lolz. (maybe he's more suitable in Qing dynasty dressing?) The female leads were all..average, in terms of character developements & acting. Only can say was that their costumes were rather elegant and simple.
Raymond & Charmaine's chemistry was good enough, while I gotta say Sonija & Derek had gd chemistry too...Bosco & Sharon was ok to me la..
Ratings: 6.5/10 (Original plot was far too different from this drama..actually Ray's character is just a minor role while Han Bo is the main character. Watch it if u are the main leads die-hard fans..or else..can skip it. )

TV Drama Review #60 - Dicey Business 赌场风云

Episodes: 35
Yr of telecast/TV Stn: 2006-2007/TVB
Main Cast:
Bobby Au Yeung ~ Qi Huan Chang
Michael Miu ~ Qiao Zheng Chu
Jessica Hsuan ~ Li Qing Yun
Bosco Wong ~ Zhang Lai Fu/Qi Huan Le
Tavia Yeung ~ Tan Zhu Mei
Summary: Qiao Zheng Chu is the CEO of "Onisac", who is a very successful businessman. He worked very hard to earn his fame and money. However, things went against his way and he stepped into a wrong path. Chu had two best friend, Chang & Rong. Chang went through many ups and downs in his life; he lost his brother Le, lost his luck in gambling, but he was lucky enough to find two best friends, who pulled him up. When Chang found out Chu's wrongdoings, everything changed. In the world of gambling, someone wins & someone loses, Chu tried so hard to win back everything, but at the same time, he lost his lover Yun, he lost his best friends, he lost his disciple Fu & he lost his mum. No one can win everything forever...In the end, people have to suffer because of Chu's mistakes...
Comments: Initially, wasnt really attracted to the plot, butta was curious how Yun can attract Chu, so I continued to watch. Plot was not bad, quite interesting, but some character developments were rather "dumb". Michael Miu & Bobby were 2 great actors, really interesting to see them on rivalry, and I think their characters were rather unique. Butta, perhaps, this show belongs to Michael's Chu la...full of developments and mixed feelings when Rong died. Jessica's performance was not bad, though many ppl didnt like her crazy Qing Yun. I liked it alot leh, coz' it's just different from her past characters. Tho her performance was quite exaggerating at the start, u cld see Yun changed as the drama moves on. Butta, her character began to reduce to a "flower vase" towards the ending...and i hardly get to see her. Don't like her contradiction on who she likes..another "dummy fella". Bosco was alright here, didnt like his character though..really wanna say Fu is "blind"...until it's too late. Haiz...i agreed with many others that his character changed too fast, rather unconvincing coz' Fu used to be a super introvert, and suddenly he had this 180 degrees change and got influence by his master Chu too easily. Tavia's image was rather new to me, but i wonder what's up with her speaking of cantonese, is it just to make an accent or she speaks like that? (nv seen her other dramas in canto before...) Her character is quite standard la, but she got many chances to flaunt her figure..hehe! Definitely must give thumbs up to other support cast, especially that veteran actor who acted as Rong (forgot his name in mandarin). Themesong was alright tho..
Ratings: 8.5/10 (This drama is not abt gambling to me, rather a story abt some ppl's ups & downs in life...we cant get everything forever, and definitely, u gotta sacrifice sometimes.)

TV Drama Review #55 - Maiden's Vow 凤凰四重奏

Episodes: 30
Yr of telecast/TV Stn: 2006/TVB
Main cast: Joe Ma & Charmaine Sheh (shall intro them in the summary)
Brief Summary: Joe and Charmaine will play four characters each spanning four generations, illustrating the evolution of a family of women and their relationships.
First Generation~Qing Dynasty 1900's
Wei Yu Feng (Charmaine) was a well-versed lady from a rich family. She had known their kitchen cook Yu C2ni since young and both of them liked each other. Yu Feng's family met with problems and she was forced to marry Wang Yu Ling (Sammul Chan). Yu Ling is a "good-for-nothing" son who only knew how to gamble and play. Soon, he ruined his family business and Feng had to sell the "Phoenix Jade Chopsticks". She opened the "Feng Huang Lou" and Ci was the master Cook of the restaurant. Soon, the Wang family gained fortune and Yu Ling started to go back to his old behaviour. Feng & Ci died when the train exploded and only left the "Feng Huang Lou" & Feng's child, Wang Zi Jun.
2nd Generation~May 4th event (1919)
Wang Zi Jun was the successor of "Feng Huang Lou". Zi Jun was a cheeful high school student and she was secretly in love with her teacher Li Ji Xiang. Ji Xiang had a fiancee but Zi Jun did not want to follow her mum's footstep. So, she tried many ways and finally touched Ji Xiang's heart. They eloped and went to Tianjin. Soon, "honeymoon" period was over, the couple was poor and quarelled over small stuffs. They parted soon after that; Jun returned to Beijing and found that her mum's restaurant had closed down while Xiang became a revolutionist. The two finally met each other and found that they still loved each other. However, Xiang had to accomplished his mission while Jun had his child. Jun waited for Xiang's return while her child grew up.
3rd Generation~1960's
Zi Jun's great-grand daughter Bai Hui Zhen was married to the egoistic Dai Li Ren, who thought that woman after marriage shld become housewife. Hui Zhen worked secretly but found her way to become Ren's boss. The two also faced problems as Zhen's boss liked her very much and kept framing Ren. Zhen and Ren received a project to promo "Feng Huang Lou", which was facing a closure. Though the couple couldnt save the restaurant, they saved their relationship. Later, they emigrated to San Francisco with the un-born Dai Si Jia and died in an earthquake.
4th Generation~Present Day
The narrator of the drama, Si Jia, was a beer girl who was independent and did not believe in marriage. She dated Fang Jia An after the guy was dumped during his wedding. An was an accountant & a perfectionist. The couple cohibited and An started to control Jia's life. Jia was frustrated and the two broke up, after An saw Jia staying over at her ex-boyfriend Ji (Sammul Chan)'s house. Jia became mature and took her great-great grandmother's receipe and kept finding investors to re-open "Feng Huang Lou". An was glad to see Jia's achievement, but unknown to Jia, he actually put in money to invest in her restaurant. Jia gave birth to An's child while Ji, who was homosexual, was fond of An. Finally, in a cooking competition, Ji & Jia won and got back the missing "Phoenix Jade Chopstick". Ji left HK while An wanted to acknowledge his son. Will the two get married finally?
Comments: Given the 4 plots, this is one of the most interesting drama from TVB last yr. If the plots became an individual drama, then it wld be boring butta, i like this creativity la. I dunno if i cld say this butta this drama is like specially designed for Charmaine, who won the best actress with this drama. She definitely deserved this award! 1st & 2nd Gen's story was acceptable, but nothing new to me. However, Sammul Chan's performance in the 1st Gen was great, very different from his past roles. Good improvement wor! Joe and Charmaine were alright here, nothing new la.
I like the 3rd Gen best coz' the whole storyline was simply funny and interesting! Firstly, the hairdo, costume, and the way they spoke Cantonese was funny. Next, the supporting cast was terrific! If they are missing, then the leads cant work out magic liao. Joe's performance was way better than his previous ones. He was more exaggerating here, with his expressions and movements. I laughed at his hairdo too...super 'Elvis' style. Charmaine was equally good here, i really like to see her being smart la. The chemistry was the best in this plot and i couldnt stand the couple when they were so sweet to each other...rang wo qi ji pi ge da wor!
4th Gen started out alright, Joe was back to his suave look while Charmaine's beer gal was refreshing. This proved that she's suitable for a wide range of characters. Her way of talking was rather rough, but suddenly she sounded so refine after she opened the restaurant. Err..that part abit fake la. The change was kinda drastic la. As for Joe leh, his character was so so here, but i still like Jia An, compared to his characters in the 1st & 2nd Gen. As for Sammul, he looked very different here too...mainly coz' he acted as gay ba. Honestly, he gave me surprises and i think he's actually better than Ron Ng or to some extent, Raymond Lam. Pls return to TVB dramas soon. Hehe!
Themesong & ending song were all sung by Charmaine, but it's ordinary to me.
Ratings: 10/10 (They might be flaws here & there, but it's definitely worth the watch!)

TV Drama Review #54 - Under the Canopy of Love 天幕下的恋人

Episodes: 20
Yr of telecast/TV Stn: 2006/TVB
Main Cast:
Kevin Cheng ~ Alan Shen Lang
Niki Chow ~ Kao Yi Shi
Bosco Wong ~ Nick Quan Li
Natalie Tong ~ Kao Yi Qing
Summary: Alan and Yi Shi first met when they went to school. They lost contact after Alan changed school. Fate brought them together again many years later and both of them fell in love as time passed. Alan met Nick at the gym and after several incidents, he thought Nick was homosexual becoz' of his behaviour.
Nick looks at Alan as his big brother and always wanted to help him out, so he held back his feelings for Shi but when Alan leaves, he expressed his feelings to her.
Comments: Plot was ordinary, and i watched this becoz' of Bosco Wong. Yeah, without him i guessed it would be too boring with just Kevin & Niki la. The on-screen couple does have chemistry since their last drama "Hard Fate", butta I dont see more "fireworks" from them la. Bosco's character really brighten up the drama lo. His behaviour, way of talking and his loyalty to his friends really outshine Kevin's Shen Lang lah. I thought the chemistry b/w the 2 guys are better lo. Especially when Alan just got to know Nick and thought he was gay, all the way till Alan realised that Nick is a normal guy. I really laugh out loud everytime i saw the 2 of them together, with a "scared" Alan & a super friendly Nick.
The other support cast was ok, didnt take much notice of Natalie's side plot with her boyfriend.
This drama does have something different from others, like every epi has a title, which is very Jpn or Twn style. Also, on and off u get to here Kevin's character narrating his views on the society and people. Well, to agree or not is up to individual la.
Themesong is rather nice this time round..haha! Finally, I really dont understand why Kevin can get "best actor award" with this drama, his acting just dont justify lo. I mean he's kinda same with other dramas he acted. At least Bosco Wong's acting & character can be differentiated lo...Haiz~ TVB just wanna "punish" somebody is it? Hahah!
Finally finished watching the rest of the 6 epis le! Hmm....nothing much to add tho, for the ending it's quite predictable la..
Ratings: 7/10 (If u're a Bosco fan, watch for him la. Otherwise, the storyline was kinda weak and plain, not really worth to catch. Btw, it's just better to listen to the Cantonese version! Hehe!)

TV Drama Review #48 - Love Guaranteed 爱情全保

Episodes: 20
Yr of telecast/TV Stn: 2006/TVB
Main Cast:
Sunny Chan ~ Ken Guo Fu Qiang
Melissa Ng ~ Hazel Gu Ruo Xi
Kenneth Ma ~ Tim Guo Fu Qin
Cherrie Kang ~ Maggie Wu Mei Qi
Summary: Ken is an insurance agent who works for a very superstitious boss Hao Jing. Resentment came in b/w him and Hazel after Hazel snatched his client and he indirectly told Hazel that her boyfriend Yuan He had known another woman. Hazel came to his company and competed with Ken's team. Just then, both of them came out with this idea of "Love insurance" and it was so successful. Hao Jing told the media that they were a couple and they have to fake their relationship in front of others, so that people wld come and buy their insurance. As time passed both of them fall in love with each other and even prepared to get married. Hazel got promoted and become Ken's superior. Ken was stressed up and on their wedding day, he told Hazel that he's not gonna to marry her....
Comments: Honestly, I didnt really enjoy the plot though it's watchable. The plot wasnt unique or interesting. It's a very standard TVB production...which i have said many times. Ha! The only part i found this drama nice was the interaction b/w Sunny Chan and Mel Ng and when the "luv insurance" was out. I dont like the couple Kenneth Ma & Cherrie Kang, kinda find them irritating. The other side plots were alright, but nothing to steal the limelight of the main leads.
Just as i was happy for the lead couple, the plot wld always make sure they wont be happy for too long...and that kinda irritates me sometimes. Like the wedding scene in epi 18..it's ending and it turned out that Ken said those words...what the... Ending was kinda rushy too...
It's nice to see Mel Ng back with strong nv qiang ren roles, reminded me of Jessica H Hsuan. Haha! Sunny and her looked quite perfect as the lead roles lah. Acting wise it's the usual stuffs from them. Not bad but nothing new to offer. Sunny's role is still the usual nice guy, abit sotong over relationship problems. Haha!
Themesong dont sound nice to me initially, butta i think it's getting nicer as i listen more la. hehe!
Ratings:7/10 (average drama...but watch it for Sunny and Melissa...haha!)
