[guitar]hmm...today kevin came...like long time didnt see him liao. he showed us his new guitar with pluck from yamaha...great buy, abt 600 plus...kaoz the guitar is good quality lor..hehe...then the practice went on..jc2s finally can use the ava room le..haha...we practiced and had breaks in between..then president question if we had practiced or slack...haha...ya we did practiced when kevin was there...even after he left...we were seperated into grps and played canon...well, of coz after that some of us played other songs while some really slack..but that doesnt matter...president was suspicious of us...thought that we told lies...well, this is due to some reasons...1) we got our records of slacking during practices..so it is normal for her to suspect us. 2) simple reason, she dun trust us and that mz said we didnt practice...kaoz...he was really a sotong..maybe he himself didnt prac lor...want to play his own song fine..dun drag us in! then some of us were unhappy that president suspected us..haha...even my pal (non-guitar member) thought so! err...i am fine with it lah...wen xin wu kui! kevin want us to have lunch-time concert in 2 weeks time...i find it abit impossible..time constraint and are we ready for it? haha that is the biggest question i wanna post. lastly, we gotta play the "angel-mortal" game with jc1s...and luckily i picked a girl! yeah! but i wonder who will pick me lah..haha..i find this game lame ah coz how can i encourage someone when i cant even know what problems she has..jc1s dun practice with us lor...if i picked a jc2 then it is different lor...haiz....hope it ends after 1 month...

Sweet Child O' Mine? : To Have or Not To Have Children?

One night, when I was 13, I asked my parents my first existential question on the meaning of life... "What is life for?" They were stumped for half a minute, till Dad attempted a lame reply, "Life is about schooling, growing up, work and play, marriage and kids." I remained silent, feeling betrayed by the ones who gave birth to me. What a lousy deal, this thing called life - which ends in eventual death anyway. I began breeding secret hatred at Mum and Dad, thinking I was conceived for supporting them in old age. How selfish! Only when I grew older did I realise most folks want children for a potpourri of mixed reasons. Many are plain lonely, more so than wanting to carry on the family name - which is an extension of familial and personal ego? Anyway, it wasn't so much of my parents wanting to create me, though we are karmically linked - but more of my own craving for life that rendered me reborn. Yup, I got me this deal - no one else to blame. In fact, I have to thank my parents (and my own good karma) for bringing me up well.

Some consider it a heinous "sin" for the married not to have any offspring - as if the purpose of life is to create more life. How ridiculous! If that was true, celibate monks and nuns, despite being great masters full of compassion and wisdom would be the greatest "sinners"! Do we justify our existence simply by bringing others into existence? Or by leading others beyond life and death in Enlightenment? Greed can manifest in wanting that which is not essential, which does not exist yet, eg. wanting to have and to hold one's children and their children (grandchildren). I used to think that to want to hear the pitter-patter of tiny feet around the house as nothing more than spiritual hollowness, craving for company, wanting someone to call your own. I thus found the child-bearing selfish, also seeing kids as potential harbingers and perpetuators of chaos and samsara in the family. Well, I was a difficult kid too!

That said, there is the other half of the picture... I usually say I don't have enough craving to want children. Nowadays, I say I don't have enough compassion to want children. The problem is never the "innocent" children themselves. The source of any suffering is always from our personal karma and attitude. It is noble and courageous to choose to provide conditioning factors for bringing beings into this precious human rebirth, where learning the Dharma is ideal. Bringing up kids with the Dharma is nothing less than nurturing future Buddhas, while trying to be a good Bodhisattva! Spiritually altruistic parenting is to bring up a child as a Bodhisattva would, lavishing years of selfless care on someone without any expectations of filial rewards. Because of the countless lessons (especially of patience) one will learn through bringing up a child, it can even be relatively more spiritually challenging to have children than not to! I salute all parents!

Anyway, this article is neither to encourage nor discourage child-bearing - but to present both sides of the picture, emphasising the importance of having right motivation in having or not having children. If you and your spouse prefer a simpler life with more time for quiet personal spiritual development, please go ahead! If you are confident of being able to do your bit in nurturing a future Buddha, please go ahead! One last thought for those who choose the latter... Should you want a child, imagine your child spiritually awakening one day, asking you why he was born? Will you be able to answer? I certainly hope so :-] -shian
